It is estimated than more than 25 million people in the United States are affected by some type of vision loss or impairment. The number is more than likely to grow over the next decade. Vision loss can be affect people’s lives very deeply, and also the lives of those around them as well. Although advances in medicine are constantly evolving, there are limited effective treatments for certain ophthalmic conditions. Acupuncture has been found effective on some ophthalmic conditions, and patients have reported improvement and recovery after a course of treatment.

Ruben has trained extensively with Dr. Andy Rosenfarb, the world’s foremost expert in the field of Chinese Medical Ophthalmology. Ruben is one of the few people that is trained and certified in Dr. Rosenfarb’s Microacupuncture 48 system.

Dr. Rosenfarb has over 20 years of experience in the field of Chinese medical ophthalmology, having done numerous research studies, including one that was conducted and published with Johns Hopkins University on the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating Retinitis Pigmentosa. Vision & Ophthalmic Treatment Program

  • #1 Question asked by patients: Are you going to put needles in my eyes? Acupuncture needles do NOT go into the eyes!

  • First time patients are encouraged to undergo 10 treatments within 5 days or 10 days. This way we can get a full understanding of the patient and determine how well the patient is responding to the treatments.

  • At the beginning of treatment, we review the patient’s medical history and request the patient conduct a recent series of vision tests (central acuity near and far, visual field, contrast and color vision) from their primary physician to establish a baseline . This is critical to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

  • Treatments are 30 minute sessions that may include MicroAcupuncture, electroacupuncture, auricular acupuncture, among others.

  • At the end of the 10 treatments, we ask that patients repeat the same vision tests from their primary care providers. This will determine how well the treatments worked.

  • Nutritional supplements and herbs may be recommended as part of the program.

Maintenance Program

Please keep in mind that this is NOT a miracle cure for degenerative eye disorders. It takes time for some patients to see results where others see improvements right away. Once we recover whatever lost vision we can, the goal is preserve remaining eyesight through maintenance treatments. Degenerative eye conditions need ongoing maintenance and will only get worse if neglected. The frequency of maintenance visits vary depend on the patient and their individual conditions. Most patients return for treatment every three or four months for the first year, then continue with maintenance treatments twice a year, or whatever treatment frequency is recommended.
